Why are boundaries so hard? It would seem that we, as adults and professionals, should find the setting of boundaries fairly simple to do. Unfortunately, it is much more difficult. Situations complicate matters, making it even more difficult to establish and even maintain boundaries. However, boundaries are necessary for our growth and development. They are necessary for our health! For some of us, we can set boundaries for certain areas of our lives while leaving other areas open and vulnerable. When setting boundaries, it is important to determine the goal/purpose. What is the end-goal. What is the purpose of the boundary? Sometimes the boundary is more for others than ourselves. Whatever the reason, establish your boundaries and (most importantly) commit to them!
Sometimes we don't realize how important it is to pace ourselves. Circumstances tend to convince us that we have to be in a hurry to get this done or that done in a certain length of time. What we have to ask ourselves is: "Why do I need to finish this so fast?" If we are not careful, our own minds will convince us of something that is not true. To whom or what are we comparing ourselves to? What works for the next person may not work for us, because each of our situations are unique. Not only that, we are individuals and not intended to be like the next person. In essence, we are hard-wired differently. Like the tortoise and the hare, it is important to focus on our own pace to finish strong!
